Question may exist within the question bank without ever creating categories. However, the more questions you add, the more jumbled and disorganized it will become.

Categories are a method of creating organization within your question bank. Each category is like a folder or a 'bag' of questions in a similar topic.

Note: When sharing Moodle quizzes with other teachers/courses, the quiz itself cannot be exported, but the category that the questions for that quiz are in CAN be exported; therefore, categories not only organize your own question bank, but also make collaboration and sharing of resources easier/possible between PLCs.

Clean Up Categories

Preparing Your Categories

Before cleaning up your current categories or before creating new ones, you'll want to decide how you would like to organize your quiz questions. By unit? By topic? Moodle lets you create detailed organization if you want it. (Image for reference.)

Once you have a plan, you will organize your questions into "parent categories" and "subcategories". First, we'll learn how to organize any existing categories in your course. Then, we'll cover how to add new categories for future question creation.

Access Your Categories

Navigate to your Moodle page and ensure you are logged in.

  1. Open your course settings (click the gear).

  2. Open your question categories.

Edit and Organize Existing Categories

  1. Click on each category to open it and determine if you want to keep the contents and/or the category.

  • The number in parentheses (#) next to the title indicates the number of questions currently in that category. Tip: You can leave a category empty (0) if it will help with organization.

  • Previewing and Moving Questions: After selecting a category from your list, you can preview the questions and even move questions to other categories from that screen.

  1. Use the settings wheel to edit the name and category description.

  2. Use the arrows to reorder your categories and/or to create a hierarchy of main and subcategories.

Create a Category

Adding a New Category

It is best practice to create the category before you create the questions that will go into that category. This makes question creation and organization easier. To add a new category:

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the Question Categories page. (To get there: Page Settings > Question Categories)

  2. Select the Parent Category. (This will determine where the category is organized in the hierarchy of categories.)

  3. Optional: Create a description for the category.

  4. Click to "Add Category".
