The majority of your students take the formative/summative assessment on paper, but your Oral Admin students need it in an online format in order to utilize R&W.

Concerned about sharing a Google Doc Assessment with students?

Moodle Page

Recommended alternative option for sharing a Google Doc formatted quiz or test.

To share contents of a Google Doc, but not have to worry about the users' ability to Add to Drive, share with others, or length of time to access, you can copy/paste the document contents into a Moodle Page; this will allow utilization of the R&W tool alongside the normal Moodle functions (hide or make page visible, restrict access to an Oral Admin Group, prevent access past a certain date, etc.)

The video below showcases how Read & Write works on:

Google Docs

R&W on a Google Doc.webm

Reading text from a Google Doc or Office365 Word Online

  1. Click on the Read&Write extension icon (purple puzzle piece) to display the toolbar

    • Toolbar will be floating; relocate on the screen as needed

  2. Use the mouse/touchpad to highlight the desired text to be read aloud

  3. Click the play button

  4. Click the pause or stop buttons as needed

Repeat steps #2-4 for each additional passage of text, unless "Continuous Reading" setting is enabled for it to keep reading past the initial selected text.

When complete, click on the Read&Write extension icon (purple puzzle piece) to remove the toolbar

Google Docs vs. Microsoft Word files

Read & Write cannot read Microsoft Word documents. However, once it is uploaded to Google Drive and opened as a Google Doc, Read and Write will work. You can convert it in your own Google Drive and then share the URL to the Google Doc with your students, or you can instruct students how to upload the provided Word Doc to their Google Drive to convert it on their own.

How can I share a Quiz or Test on a Google Doc so students have their Oral Accommodation met, but protect the integrity of the assessment so students can't save it, download it, or share it with other people?

The resource to the right will show you how to restrict the Share Settings of both:

  1. The Google Doc itself so students cannot -

    • change their level of access or share with additional people

    • download, print, or make a copy of the document to "save" for use after class

  2. The Group (ex. Oral Admin) of students it is shared with in Moodle so the file isn't even visible to non-oral accommodated students
